Alumni Profile - Andrew McKenna '15

Andrew McKenna '15

April 2015

Andrew McKenna ‘15 is the model for a motivated student leader. He is a current club officer, peer mentor, maintains a high academic GPA while also working part time and is currently completing an internship. As President of the Business Society, he has helped create a speaker series that has hosted senior managers of companies like Wawa, Comcast, The Vanguard Group and Toll Brothers. For these reasons and many others, the Alumni Association named him the first ever Student Alumni Ambassador and he is a nominee for the 2015 Outstanding Student Achievement Award.

What year did you graduate from Delaware County Community College and with what degree?
"I am a current student, majoring in Business Administration and will be graduating in May. I am proud to say I have achieved Dean’s List status each semester for the last two years at the College.”

Will you pursue further academic goals?
"I have applied to several four-year schools including George Washington University, University of Virginia, Franklin and Marshall College, Boston College and Georgetown University. Of that list, my top choice would be to attend Georgetown, and I should hear about my application soon.”

Where are you now?
"I am finishing my classes at the College while working part time as an Assistant Manager at Starbucks and completing an internship at a local asset management firm. Later this summer, I will be interning at QVC in their Content Marketing department. Outside of the classroom, I have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and still volunteer with my Boy Scout Troop from time to time.

My other current ‘job’ is President of the Business Society for the College. As a club officer, I help coordinate the other students in the group and work with my faculty advisor, Professor Anthony Daly-Leonard, to help learn more about the business professions we will enter after graduation. As part of my club’s work, we have created a speaker series that has hosted the CEO’s of International Recovery Group, Wawa, Vanguard and senior financial managers from Comcast, Toll Brothers and SAP. It’s been a great project to work on and exciting to meet these industry leaders personally while learning what made them successful in their high powered roles. We had scheduled a local entrepreneur who was featured on ABC’s hit show Shark Tank but he was ultimately unable to attend."

What is next for you professionally?
"After completing the rest of my education, my eventual goal is to open my own wealth management company, specifically for individuals in the entertainment industry. On my path there, I plan on gaining a mixture of experience in marketing, leadership and asset management.”

What is your favorite memory of your time on campus, outside of the classroom?
"I enjoy the diversity of campus the most. One of the many attributes that distinguishes the College from other schools is the profoundly different backgrounds of the student body. I've been in class with retired people as well as an extremely smart high school student who is taking part in the dual enrollment program. My classes host people from countries around the globe. I'm able to learn about our world from all of these different people and this is one of the most spectacular features about our school.”

What advice would you give to current students and Alumni to capitalize on the education they received from the College?
"The College provides a great educational base. The most essential things one can do to help build on the foundation this school provides is to work harder than everyone else, never stop reading and never stop networking. These things will ensure that you're always prepared and that you'll have lots of great opportunities ahead of you.”
