This exhibition will showcase work by contemporary artists who critically evaluate the ways in which images of, and information about, diverse communities, events, and conflicts are circulated and contextualized via contemporary media networks.
The exhibition concerns the relationship between “multiculturalism” and today’s communications technologies, addressing issues pertinent to mainstream media —censorship, surveillance, media biases and cultural stereotypes — as well as social media — its democratization, its role in coordinating social movements and revolutions, as well as its occasional abuse by anonymous users. Within the context of the 2015 Articulture Biennial Arts Festival theme of “multiculturalism.” CHANNELS offers an inquiry into how we participate in the creation and dissemination of intercultural knowledge.
About the Curator: Independent curator and current Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, Allison Young is the curator of the Articulture Biennial Arts Festival Exhibition, CHANNELS.
