articulture logoIn the spring of 2015, the Arts at Delaware County Community College will hold its fourth biennial arts festival, Articulture. An interdisciplinary committee of art faculty drawn from fine arts, graphic design, drama, and music, the Gallery Director, and the Managing Director of the festival planned and facilitated this project over more than a year. Each festival revolves around a theme and explores how the arts interpret, engage and elucidate the thematic concept for that year’s festival.

2015 Articulture Biennial Arts Festival: Multiculturalism in Contemporary Art

The 2015 Articulture Biennial Arts Festival will explore how artists and performers celebrate and pay homage to cultural origins in contemporary art. The exhibition CHANNELS: Media, Culture and Representationexamines the ways in which diverse cultures and communities are represented in mainstream and social media, and features artists who make innovative and critical use of these platforms.

The New Music Concert Series invites Latin Fiesta to the College in April for a performance that celebrates their Hispanic heritage and explores the contemporary contributions to Latin music. Latin Fiesta transports its audiences by performing a wide array of musical styles in their energetic crossover concerts — salsa, classical, newly-commissioned works, and more — on contemporary stages.

The film Flamenco Hoy will be screened as part of the Articulture Biennial Arts Festival in conjunction with the College’s SpectiCast Series in HD. This film brings the art of flamenco dance to the big screen using advanced technology in filming. While at one point one would have to travel far to experience a performance like this, contemporary cultural programming from around the globe is readily available through today’s technology.

2015 Articulture Calendar of Events

Visual Arts Exhibition | CHANNELS: Media, Culture and Representation

Opening Reception Wednesday, March 25 3 - 7 p.m. | Art Gallery | Room 2305

Artist Discussion with artists Atif Akin, Austin Merril of Everyday Africa, Mariangeles Soto-Díaz, and the exhibition's curator Allison Young
Thursday, March 26 (Time/Location TBD)

This Exhibition will showcase work by contemporary artists who critically evaluate the ways in which images of, and information about, diverse communities, events, and conflicts are circulated and contextualized via contemporary media networks.

The exhibition concerns the relationship between “multiculturalism” and today’s communications technologies, addressing issues pertinent to mainstream media —censorship, surveillance, media biases and cultural stereotypes — as well as social media — its democratization, its role in coordinating social movements and revolutions, as well as its occasional abuse by anonymous users. Within the context of the 2015 Articulture Biennial Arts Festival theme of “multiculturalism.” CHANNELS offers an inquiry into how we participate in the creation and dissemination of intercultural knowledge.

About the Curator: Independent curator and current Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, Allison Young is the curator of the Articulture Biennial Arts Festival Exhibition, CHANNELS.

The Latin Fiesta ensemble has won wide acclaim as a pioneer in the presentation of crossover concerts. The ensemble is led by award winning performers Maria del Pico Taylor, Cuban born pianist and Raymond Taylor, English born violinist. The composition of the group consists of Maria-piano, Raymond Taylor-violin, Vania Taylor-lead vocalist, Cynthia Folio-flute, Fernando Valencia, Tom Lowery, Christian Noguera and Cuco Aponte on Latin percussion, Kevin MacConnell-bass, Liliana Ruiz Davis-Latin/Flamenco dancer.  The unorthodox composition of this ensemble  lends itself to exciting and versatile programming.  Rarely does one hear a crossover concert that shifts from a hot salsa tune to a classical work by Albeniz, and then incorporates a contemporary Latin version of a Baroque Concerto Grosso, or a recent commissioned piece by Oscar Hernandez, Carlos Franzetti, Arturo O'Farrill or Tania Leon, ending with the audience rising out of their seats to join in an Afro-Cuban conga line.
