47 Cadets Graduate from Delaware County Community College’s Municipal Police Academy, Including 21 SEPTA Police Officers
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA - June 20, 2023)—On a beautiful June evening, 47 new police officers graduated from Delaware County Community College’s Municipal Police Academy (MPA). The graduation class at the June 15 ceremony at Ridley High School in Folsom, Pa. included 21 newly hired officers for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), seven female cadets, two Amtrak officers, and one cadet each for the Chester Police Department, Villanova University Police Department, Caln Township Police department and Upper Merion Police Department.
The College had a three-year contract with SEPTA to train their newly hired officers.
“This class represents an historic achievement for the SEPTA Transit Police Department, and we are grateful for our partnership with Delaware County Community College,” said SEPTA Chief Operating Officer Scott Sauer, a 2003 alum of the College. “This is the largest class of recruits for SEPTA in many years, and it will increase the size of the Transit Police Department force by more than 10 percent. Thanks to the training they received through the College’s Municipal Police Academy, these new officers will be well-equipped to serve and protect our riders, employees, and the communities SEPTA serves.”
More than 95 percent of the municipal police officers in Delaware County and more than 75 percent of the police officers in Chester County are Delaware County Community College MPA graduates. Cadets are required to complete a rigorous, 920-hour curriculum that includes extensive instruction in firearms, physical fitness, self-defense, Homeland Security, scenario training and practical exercises. The Academy is certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Training and coursework take place at the College’s Marple Campus, located at 901 South Media Line Road, Media, PA 19063.
Delaware County Community College’s MPA conducts training for the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission program in accordance with Pennsylvania Legislative Act 120.
The MPA has been serving the community since 1977 and conducts mandatory Act 180 in-service training for current municipal police officers. The next class starts in July 2023. Interested individuals should visit www.dccc.edu/mpa for more information.
