Philadelphia-based photographer Jiaqi Pan’s work combines repetitive structures with strikingly empathetic portraits, resulting in a series that challenges viewers to look more closely at the spaces they encounter every day. In her 2016 series Drive-Thru, Pan photographed women of color framed within the windows of fast-food delivery lanes. The idiosyncratic character of Pan’s subjects undermines the uniformity of the spaces, thereby compelling the viewer to consider the individuals behind this corporate production of food. The exhibition contributes to programming surrounding Delaware County Community College’s 2019 College-wide Reading selection, Raj Patel’s Stuffed and Starved (rev. ed. 2012), which centers on the tension between the largely invisible mechanisms of industrial food markets and the shattering consequences of these structures for individual farmers and consumers. In focusing on the women of color who often work in drive-thru restaurants, Pan’s photography insists upon their visibility within the otherwise homogenizing space of industrial food production.
