Delaware County Community College Welcomes Chester-Upland as Sponsoring School District
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • December 1, 2010)—Delaware County Community College recently welcomed the Chester-Upland School District as a sponsor, making it more affordable for residents to attend the College. The PA State Board of Education approved this action during its November meeting.
"I am pleased that residents of the Chester-Upland School District will have a greater opportunity to take advantage of Delaware County Community College's quality, affordable and responsive educational opportunities and its technologically rich and supportive learning environment," said Jerry Parker, President of the College.
This sponsorship was made possible when the Senate approved gaming legislation earlier this year. It included provisions allocating a portion of table games revenue to communities hosting casinos. Approval of the Chester-Upland School District's petition to become a sponsor of the College means the Chester-Upland student cost per credit hour will be cut in half, making higher education more affordable to Chester residents. The lower rate will take effect in the spring of 2011.
Access to higher education is critical for 21st century communities and a vital part of producing a skilled workforce. This sponsorship is a great example of state and local governments working together to make higher education more affordable and accessible and has put a college education in reach for many students and residents who would otherwise be unable to afford a college education.
The inclusion of the Chester-Upland School District increases the number of sponsoring school districts to twelve. Those districts include Garnet Valley School District (Bethel residents only), Haverford School District, Interboro School District, Radnor School District, Ridley School District, Rose Tree Media School District, Southeast Delco School District, Springfield School District, Upper Darby School District, Wallingford-Swarthmore School District (Swarthmore and Rutledge residents only), and William Penn School District.
