With Election Day drawing nearer, the symposium will delve into the issues surrounding the much-discussed 2018 midterm elections. The event is open to the public and will occur in the Large Auditorium from 1:45 to 3:30 p.m. on the Marple Campus (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA).

Madison, host of The Joe Madison Show on SiriusXM’s Urban View Channel 126, will moderate a lively discussion addressing key topics surrounding the midterm elections, including voter responsibility. Also known as “The Black Eagle,” Madison is a human and civil rights activist who uses his voice to demand action against injustice and challenge his listeners to do something about it. His 52-hour live broadcast in 2015 broke a Guinness World Record and raised over $200,000 for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. In June 2015, Madison made history again by broadcasting live from Cuba, becoming the first national talk show in America to do so in more than 50 years. Madison has also led successful campaigns to honor comedian Dick Gregory and Motown artists The Four Tops with long overdue stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In addition to Madison, panelists include Laura Coates, host of The Laura Coates Show on SiriusXM’s Urban View Channel; Tarik Khan, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, CRNP, a nurse practitioner with the Family Practice & Counseling Network; Bryan Monroe, Verizon Chair and Professor of Journalism at Temple University’s School of Media and Communication; and Jean Strout, staff attorney at the Support Center for Child Advocates and an Equal Justice Works Fellow (sponsored by Greenberg Traurig LLP). A question-and-answer session will follow the discussion. Voter registration, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, will be available from 11:05 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

America in Crisis is an ongoing lecture series created and sponsored by the College’s Business, Computing and Social Science division. Prior topics covered have included addiction and the #MeToo movement. The spring 2019 lecture will focus on food insecurity with Sara Goldrick-Rab, Professor of Higher Education Policy and Sociology at Temple University, moderating.
