Mathematics is central to a variety of applications and algorithms in aerospace engineering. Pratt, who worked as a research engineer for commercial jet engines at Pratt & Whitney and as a space systems engineer for Lockheed Martin, will highlight examples in shock and vibration, optimal design, heat transfer, planning and scheduling and more. His talk will illustrate real-world applications of calculus, trigonometry, linear algebra, differential equations and probability and statistics. He will also delve into current events and articles, including those about airplane bird strikes, geared turbofan engines and the Hubble Space Telescope.
