Theoretical Approach, Experience, and Temperament
Regardless of the level of the course, my teaching is comprised of three concurrent elements: discussion, writing, and workshop. All three components are based on the central principle of analysis, which is the basic tool for demonstrating both rational and creative thinking as well as writing ability. I believe discussion and a sense of community are necessary for every course. Learning is an active process, not a passive acceptance of information, so the student and I share a responsibility to work with each other to achieve course goals in a symbiotic relationship. The most important resource in the classroom is each student’s willingness to participate, which energizes the class and guides the direction of my instruction. One of my main tasks, then, is to cultivate the students’ enthusiasm. To this end, values such as honesty, integrity and compassion have served me well in the classroom. It is important to engage the entire student, to deal with the personality as well as the person. Writing a good paragraph, appreciating a poem, and developing a thesis statement are not skills that are learned strictly by processing facts, but also by examining oneself. The student must bring his or her whole being to the act of learning, as must I to teaching.
