Maria Suzanne Boyd holds a B.A. in Radio/TV/Film from the University of North Texas (1995) and a M.A. in Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin (2010). She is in the process of completing her doctorate from Georgia State University. Maria also spent over a decade working in the industrial video industry where she assisted government agencies and non-profit organizations with harassment prevention and diversity awareness training initiatives. Her current research interests include Media Industries Studies, Television Studies, and LGBT visibility in Popular Culture. Maria has presented research at conferences such as NCA,SCMS, PCA/ACA, and Flow. She is currently working on her dissertation titled Unscripted: The Invisible Labor of Reality TV Writers. As part of Maria’s assistantship work at Georgia State University, she taught the following courses: History of Motion Pictures, TV Analysis, Reality Based TV Genres and Critical History of Radio and Television. Maria is the 2014 recipient of the Carol Winkler Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award. Maria’s other academic service has included working on the Velvet Light Trap selection committees, column editing for Flow and curating theme weeks for In Media Res. Maria is now an Assistant Professor at Delaware County Community College. She teaches courses such as Mass Communication (COMM 104) and Interpersonal Communication (COMM 100).
