I began my working life as a technical writer at IBM's programming laboratory in Poughkeepsie, New York. For most of the 1990s, I was a religious brother in the Congregation of Holy Cross, where my primary assignments were in hospital ministry and higher education. My most notable teaching positions were at St. Louis High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana and at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. After leaving Holy Cross, I taught various mathematics courses at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Jacksonville University, and Texas Tech University. I earned my PhD in mathematics at the University of Central Florida in 2003. From 2003-2014, I taught mathematics at Troy University's Montgomery, Alabama campus. The highlight of my time with Troy was a short-term posting at Saigon Technology University in Ho Chi Minh City. I joined the faculty at DCCC in 2014, and have been teaching algebra, pre-calculus (my favorite), and calculus classes ever since. In my free time, I study Mandarin Chinese; I have been to China four times, taking summer Mandarin courses in Dalian (twice), Guilin, and Harbin. During the Summer 2021 and 2022 semesters, I completed Zoom-based (live from China) intermediate Chinese courses with Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University in Suzhou. I was a 2019-2020 Fulbright Scholar, and taught engineering mathematics at Mandalay Technology University in Mandalay, Myanmar from December 2019-March 2020.
