FBI is Career Goal
An Alumni Profile with Patrick Montone '08
Patrick Montone chose to proudly serve in the United States Army following the completion of his associate's degree at the College. Now, back from Afghanistan, he is focusing on a return to academics and hopes for a future with the FBI.
What year did you graduate from Delaware County Community College and with what degree?
I graduated from Delaware County Community College in May, 2008 with an associate degree in criminal justice.
Did you pursue further academic goals?
I successfully transferred to West Chester University in the fall of 2008 to further my coursework but ended up enlisting in the United States Army during my first semester.
Where are you now?
I just completed one tour of duty, having returned from serving overseas. My unit was the 2nd brigade, 2nd infantry division of Charlie Company. We were a Stryker vehicle unit which served in Afghanistan from 2009 – 2010. My assignment was as an M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) machine gunner (an automatic light machine gun), and I have been qualified as an expert on that weapon system as well.
Based on my experiences, I take great pride in my role within the platoon and for my service to my country. I was able to fight as a member of a platoon in close combat and have also matured quickly because of the military.
What is next for you professionally?
I plan on going back to college and receiving my bachelor's degree in criminal justice in order to one day join the FBI.
What advice would you give to current students and alumni to capitalize on the education they received from the College?
I learned that in order to get anywhere good in life it's up to you and that's it. No one will help you to reach your goal, and relying on a helpful hand will only hold you back. The world one enters after graduation is cold and only fierce determination scores worthy results. Make sure you learn everything possible while in school so you are better prepared to implement required skills when called upon.
My advice to current students of Delaware County Community College is to use your time in school to mature quickly and become self reliant. As I mentioned earlier, once you receive your diploma, the helping hands one has come to rely on for so many years dissipate very quickly.
