Service Animals and Emotional Support Animals

Service Animals

A service animal is a dog (or, in rare cases, a miniature horse) that is individually trained to perform a specific task for a person with a disability, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990).

Emotional Support Animals

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support to individuals with psychiatric or emotional disabilities. Because ESAs are not trained to perform a specific task, they are not considered service animals under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Since the college does not offer campus housing and ESAs are not covered under the ADA, ESAs are not permitted in classrooms, labs, offices, or other campus facilities.
