Program Description

 Effective: Spring 2024

The Music Industry Certificate enables students to develop skills in music production, music theory, composition, and music business.  Students will analyze current practices and trends in the Music Industry and learn from experiential projects that will develop their technical, entrepreneurial, and artistic skills. Students who complete the Music Industry Certificate will be prepared for entry level positions in music marketing, music publishing, recording studios and music production companies. Students may also transfer their studies to the varied Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree programs available in the music field.  

 Courses Included:

  • Music Business: Explore copyright law, music publishing, marketing, and artist management.
  • Music Technology: Learn recording techniques, audio production software, and DAW studio operations.
  • Applied Music: Receive instruction in piano performance.
  • Music Theory: Deepen your understanding of musical structure, harmony, and composition.

 Program Entry Requirements:  

This certificate is open to all students regardless of past musical experience. Students are required to take placement exams at the time of admission. Students who are identified as needing developmental course work must satisfactorily complete the appropriate English and mathematics courses to complete the certificate. A music placement exam, which allows students to complete MUS 101: Music Fundamentals and/or MUS 125: Piano I by examination, is also available for students already possessing an introductory understanding of music theory and/or a keyboard performance background.
