(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • September 20, 2012)—Don’t miss the opportunity to examine the hidden beauty, truth and messages in still life through The Arts at Delaware County Community College’s upcoming exhibition. “THINGS”: The Still Life in Contemporary Art features two and three-dimensional works and will be on view October 4, to November 2, 2012, in the Art Gallery (Academic Building, Room 2305, 901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA). The exhibition kicks off Thursday, October 4, with a roundtable discussion at 11 a.m. followed by a book signing by Audrey Flack of her book Art and Soul and an opening reception from 12 to 3 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
Curated by Bertha Steinhardt Gutman, Professor of Art at the College, THINGS features 11 local and national artists showcasing everything from paintings and photographs to ceramics and mixed media. Gutman selected the artists based on their varying aesthetic, conceptual concerns and unique sensibilities. Participating artists are painters Lennart Anderson, Fred Badalamenti, Harold Bruder, Catherine Drabkin, George Dugan and Erin Raedke; photographer and painter Audrey Flack; mixed media artists Mona Brody and Mike Cloud; and 3D artists Dirk Staschke and Ian Tornay.
“The tradition of the still life in art has continued to be a driving force for artistic discovery and investigation since the Egyptians recorded images of THINGS in their tombs and since classical antiquity as evidenced by the depiction of THINGS in Greek and Roman art. Artists today continue to exploit the common, ordinary and mundane arrangements of THINGS within their creative practice,” says Gutman. “Often artists seek to capture the simple beauty and truth of the everyday, natural or even man-made THING. Sometimes artists instill hidden messages worthy of analytic investigation within their still life. So whether the purity of sensual pleasure or symbolic parody is the driving goal for the artist of the still life there is always this lowest of common denominators present and that is the persistence of THINGS as focal point in the artworks.”
