(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • September 1, 2015)—The fall season of The Arts at Delaware County Community College kicks off on September 9 with the opening of Face to Face: The Craniofacial Program Portrait Project. The exhibition runs until October 9 and a reception, presentation and project documentary screening will take place on Thursday, September 24, beginning at 4 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
Face to Face is a partnership among Studio Incamminati of Philadelphia, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Edwin and Fannie Gray Hall Center for Human Appearance. The exhibition features artists from Studio Incamminati, School for Contemporary Realist Art, using the intimate process of portrait painting to help youths with craniofacial conditions see themselves in a more positive light. More importantly, it serves as a catalyst for discussion on the way we see each other and ourselves.
The vision for Face to Face stems from a shared passion for art and medicine between world-renowned artist Nelson Shanks, founder and artistic director of Studio Incamminati, and esteemed plastic surgeon Dr. Linton Whitaker, founder of the Craniofacial Program at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Linton and Shanks believe in the power of art and medicine to heal the body and nourish the soul, and their vision gave rise to this remarkable project, which is the first of its kind in the United States.
In addition to the opening reception on September 24, there will also be a project presentation and documentary screening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Large Auditorium in the Academic Building on the Marple Campus (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA). The exhibition itself is in the College’s Art Gallery, located in Room 2305 in the Academic Building and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Caitlin Flaherty, Assistant to the Dean for Arts Programming, at 610-359-5266.
