(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • October 3, 2014)—Delaware County Community College and Upper Darby High School have announced a new scholarship opportunity for graduates of Upper Darby High School. The new program is made possible by a member of the Board of Directors of Delaware County Community College’s Educational Foundation, who has made a $3,000 gift for scholarships and issued a challenge to the Upper Darby community to match his gift.
In addition, Upper Darby High School will match the $3,000 gift through a remainder trust, according to Liz McDonald, Supervisor, Social Studies, Art and Music, Upper Darby School District, and manager of the school’s scholarship program.
Because of the positive momentum generated by the new gift, the Upper Darby Scholarship Challenge Committee, which is led by Sloan Walker, an Educational Foundation board member from Radnor, is challenging the Upper Darby community to raise an additional $6,000. If successful, this would bring the total amount of scholarship funds available to $12,000. All members of the Upper Darby community are invited to participate in this challenge, which ends in December 2014.
Upper Darby community spirit has been generating scholarship support since 1922, and now totals over $300,000 in scholarship awards annually. Jennifer Schoener, Executive Director, Upper Darby Arts & Education Foundation, is among the members of the Upper Darby Scholarship Challenge Committee.
Matching gifts received in response to the challenge grant will be used exclusively to support Upper Darby High School students attending Delaware County Community College. The number of Upper Darby High School graduates enrolled at the College last year totaled 2,231, according to Kathleen Breslin, College vice president, Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the Delaware County Community College Educational Foundation. “As the largest high school feeder school to the College in the region, Upper Darby High School would certainly be able to provide a large pool of qualified candidates for the new scholarships,” said Breslin.
