(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)— Delaware County Community College is pleased to announce that Dr. Susan M. Ward, assistant professor of Communication Studies, is the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award.
Ward of West Chester teaches public speaking, debate and interpersonal communication. Students fill her classes, even her public speaking class—a course known for making students anxious because they have to speak in front of an audience. Ward redesigned the public speaking class and her redesign is now used as a template for other instructors.
She is author of a variety of publications, including “Instructor’s Resource Manual for THINK Public Speaking,” Pearson Higher Education, 2012. A graduate of Regent University where she received a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, concentrating in rhetoric and persuasion, Ward also has a Master of Arts in Communication Studies from West Chester University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Spanish from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO.
“I’m honored and humbled to receive the award. I don’t believe that one wins a teaching award on one’s own merit. I have been fortunate to have the support and encouragement of many people throughout my professional career,” Ward said. “Most importantly, I was well cared for by educators throughout my life and it is my privilege to model that care for my students. At the end of the day, I do what I do because my students are definitely worth it, as they teach me as much as I teach them.”

Since 1961, the Lindback Award has been recognizing outstanding faculty members at 52 colleges and universities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Individuals are nominated based on their commitment to the intellectual and social development of students. Their approach to teaching should be intellectually challenging, stimulating, and accessible, and their efforts should extend beyond the classroom.
