(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)—Delaware County Community College is partnering with the nonprofit Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians to provide a workshop for legally work-authorized immigrants to learn how they can transfer their professional credentials to the United States. The event will occur on Thursday, September 13, 2012, from 5:30-8 p.m. in the College’s STEM Center (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA). Participants must register in advance.
“A remarkable 41 percent of immigrants in Delaware County have college degrees,” explains the Welcoming Center’s Amanda Bergson-Shilcock. “They arrive in the U.S. full of excitement and plans for how they will use their professional training. Unfortunately, they often end up working in much lower-level jobs. It’s a terrible waste of their education, and it has expensive consequences for our economy.”
The Pathways to Success workshop is designed to change that, providing practical advice to qualified immigrants who want to establish American careers. Presenters will include staff from the Welcoming Center as well as from the nonprofit World Education Services, a credential evaluation service, and human-resources staff of a local employer.
Attendees will also learn about what Delaware County Community College has to offer for those who want to obtain additional U.S. training in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professions. The College recently invested $60 million in a new STEM Complex, which consists of the STEM Center for the study of STEM fields and the Advanced Technology Center for hands-on training in technical fields, and positions itself as a regional leader in STEM education.
Pre-registration for this free event is required. Call 215-557-2626.
