(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • February 27, 2023)—By connecting scientists, the artistic community and the public, Rebecca Rutstein’s artwork addresses climate change—the most pressing issue of our century. The Art Gallery at Delaware County Community College is hosting an exhibition, Rebecca Rutstein: Sublime Nature, from March 6 to April 14, in Room 2305 of the Academic Building on the Marple Campus (901 South Media Line Road, Media PA, 19063).
Rutstein’s abstract paintings represent a wide variety of oceanic activity, ranging from microscopic bacteria within hydrothermal vents in Mexico’s Guaymas Basin to the upswell of salty ocean waters into the freshwater systems off the coast of British Columbia. She constructs her imagery during residencies aboard oceanic expeditions with scientific collaborators around the world.
On Tuesday, March 28 at 4 p.m. in the Academic Building’s Large Auditorium on the Marple Campus, there will be a special Artist Talk that is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Registration is recommended, and the talk will also be available via livestream. Rutstein’s work has been featured on ABC, CBS, NPR, and in the Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post and Philadelphia Magazine.
Rebecca Rutstein: Sublime Nature contributes to programming surrounding Delaware County Community College’s 2022-2023 College-Wide Reading selection, Kimberly Nicholas’s Under the Sky We Make (Putnam, 2021), which spurs readers to grapple with the realities of climate change and recognize their own role in combatting the crisis. The Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday; please check www.dccc.edu/art-gallery for the most current hours. Rebecca Rutstein: Sublime Nature is sponsored by the College’s Communication, Arts & Humanities Division.
The Art Gallery at Delaware County Community College hosts up to five visual art exhibitions each year, showcasing the work of students as well as professional artists of national and international reputation. In addition to exhibitions, artists are periodically invited to hold lectures, collaborative projects and workshops for the College community and the public.
