College Named Great College to Work For™ in Nationwide Survey For 10th Consecutive Year

Great Colleges to Work For logo(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • September 23, 2019)—For the tenth consecutive year, The Chronicle of Higher Education has recognized Delaware County Community College as one of its Great Colleges to Work For™. The results were released recently by ModernThink LLC, which conducted the nationwide survey as part of The Chronicle’s 12th annual report on the Academic Workplace.

Delaware County Community College is one of only 85 institutions recognized this year. The list includes 60 four-year colleges and 25 two-year colleges. ModernThink’s survey was based on responses received from more than 56,000 people at 236 institutions: 152 four-year colleges and universities and 84 two-year colleges. All accredited institutions in the United States with an enrollment of at least 500 were invited to participate.

“To have been recognized for 10 consecutive years among the Great Colleges to Work For™ is a wonderful testament to the caring environment that students, faculty and staff enjoy at Delaware County Community College,” said College President Dr. L. Joy Gates Black. “Satisfied employees are an essential element to delivering a nurturing education and training environment for our students, allowing them to fully achieve their personal goals.”

While last year, the College was recognized in three categories, this year, the College was recognized in five categories:

  • Compensation & Benefits—Compensation and Benefits: Pay is fair, and benefits meet the needs of employees.
  • Facilities, Workspace & Security—Facilities adequately meet needs, the appearance of the campus is pleasing, and the institution takes steps to provide a secure environment.
  • Supervisor/Department Chair Relationship—Supervisor makes expectations clear and solicits ideas.
  • Teaching Environment (Faculty Only)—Faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching.
  • Work/Life Balance—Policies give employees the flexibility to manage their personal lives.

“The institutions recognized in this year’s Great Colleges to Work For® program don’t wait for problems to occur to pay attention to their people. Conversely, they’re intentional in being good stewards of their institutions’ cultures and shaping the day-to-day experience of their faculty and staff to the ultimate benefit of their students,” said Richard K. Boyer, Managing Partner at ModernThink, which administered the survey for The Chronicle.

Great Colleges to Work For™ is one of the largest and most-respected higher education workplace recognition programs in the country. The survey featured a two-part assessment process: a survey (ModernThink Higher Education Insight Survey©) administered to faculty, administrators, exempt professional and non-exempt staff, as well as adjuncts at two-year colleges; and an institutional questionnaire that captured employment data and workplace policies and practices from each institution.
