In September 2019, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Delaware County Community College announced that they signed an agreement of sale for the historic former Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School Property located at Garrett Road and Lansdowne Avenue in Upper Darby Township. The College’s President, Dr. L. Joy Gates Black, outlined plans for the 118,000 square foot Prendergast building. “Based on the important feedback we have received from our community members, we envision a comprehensive, multi-use facility that will provide quality, affordable education and training, as well as community programs for Delaware County residents,” Dr. Gates Black said.
The full-service campus will include:
- Approximately 30 classrooms with chemistry and biology labs
- An array of academic and career or technical programs
- Comprehensive student support services
- Community education programs
- Dedicated space for a community empowerment center providing access to various county resources
- A separate early childhood education center on the property
The early childhood education center, which will be operated by the YMCA of Eastern Delaware County, will not only provide much-needed childcare for students with children, but it will also serve as a learning lab for students pursuing certificates or a degree in Early Childhood Education.
Additional academic and career and technical programs that may be offered at the new campus include Culinary Arts, Electro-Mechanical Technologies, Health Studies/Pre-Nursing, the Nurse Aide course, Science for the Health Professions and other degree and certificate programs that lead directly into the workforce.
The $3 million purchase includes the Prendergast building and an approximately 8.5-acre parcel of the 30-acre property. Further architectural and engineering analysis needs to be completed as well as applications for zoning and capital funding with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Once funding is approved, the College anticipates the renovation and construction to take approximately 18 months to complete. The total cost of the project is estimated at $55 million.
