I attended Willamette University, a small liberal arts school in Salem, Oregon, for my B.A. in Biology with a second major in German. After working as a lab technician and pursuing postbaccalaureate studies at San Francisco State University, I obtained a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Chicago. I spent the next 10 years doing research as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston where I worked on the cellular basis of simple forms of learning.
