Long awaited changes to MLA citation standards have arrived.

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

BE SURE TO CHECK WITH YOUR INSTRUCTOR BEFORE USING THE NEW GUIDELINES WHICH ARE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT FOR ELECTRONIC PUBLICATIONS.

Good news from MLA. Beginning April, 2009, the MLA does not require the URL (that is the actual web address) for database citations. Also eliminated from the new standards are the Library Name, City , State. The inclusion of URL for “free” web sites appears to be optional. The Library has multiple copies of the newly published guidelines on order. For immediate access to the changes , go to owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/15/ . The DCCC Library will be revising all of its MLA helpsheets over the next few weeks. Flexibility will be required as the transition takes place in the month of April. Your instructor has the final say over which version you should be using. (mg)

DCCC and Research Skills made formal…

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

The way our society gathers and uses information has changed drastically over the past 15 years.  In order to ensure that DCCC students are information literate, the faculty librarians and the Computer Information Systems faculty are proposing the following changes to college Competency 9:

Graduates of DCCC should be information literate and use technology skills to meet information needs for their professional, personal, and academic lives. Therefore, graduates should be able to:

1.   Select, access, and use appropriate sources for content.

2.   Evaluate information for relevancy, currency, and appropriateness.

3.    Organize and synthesize information into knowledge.

4.   Describe the components of computer hardware and software and their uses.

5.   Create and edit reports and presentations using appropriate software.

6.   Communicate electronically using methods such as e-mail, forums, and chat rooms.

7.   Use the Internet to search for, retrieve, and evaluate information.

8.   Understand the concept of databases and data storage.

      9.   Understand the legal and ethical issues regarding plagiarism and copyright.

If you have any question or concerns about this proposed change, please contact Dr. Karen Rege, Director of Library Services at krege@dccc.edu  by April 30th.    (mg)

Multimedia as a resource…

Friday, March 6th, 2009

While you are looking for sources for that research paper, don’t forget to check the library catalog for DVD’s and videotapes. Just go to library.dccc.edu and click “search books/videos.” You can use the advanced option on the toolbar to search dvd only category OR videotape only. DCCC owns 186 dvd’s and 2000+ videos. Also, there are a few dozen instructional films available directly through the library’s web page. To access the streaming videos, go to library.dccc.edu, click “Search for articles/databses” tab, and scroll to bottom of page for a link to streaming videos. mg.
