YOU name the subject: Tagging your way in del.icio.us

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Maybe you already know about the list of free web sites that DCCC librarians have deemed to be reliable and list-worthy available at http://dccc.edu/library/ereference.html…but did you also know that tech-wiz librarian Erica Danowitz set these same sites into a DEL.ICIO.US format?

The DEL.ICIO.US link at http://del.icio.us/dccclibraryoperates on the concept of “tagging,” which is a way for users to determine the best keyword to describe a topic, based on the greatest number of users who are thinking alike. So, If 10 out of 10 people call it “careers,“ for example, than the site will be classified under “careers” first, and then jobs, employment, vocational guidance, etc. as warranted by that particular keyword’s popularity. After all, Time magazine called YOU (as in those who participate in user-driven sites like del.icio.us) the “Person of the Year” in 2006! Tags are the new subject headings when  DEL.ICIO.US puts the power to categorize in your hands.
