Resources In The Math/Science Center
The Math/Science Learning Center has two computer lab areas for students
to use: a math lab and a National Science Foundation lab. Numerous computer programs have
been installed by the faculty, and math programs are available on all computers. Faculty members
can reserve a classroom located in the Center.
Please note:
The Math and Science Center is the only lab that has the necessary computer software for math and science students. Because of this, students who need to use a computer for other courses must use one of the general computing labs or the Learning Center.
A DCCC ID card is necessary to borrow materials to use in the lab.
Various math and science classes are scheduled to use both lab areas during the day. Students enrolled in an individualized math course may use one of the labs during these times, but any other math/science students must wait until the classes have finished using the computers.

Individualized Math Courses
What is an individualized math course?
This is a course that meets for 3 hours a week with your instructor in the Math/Science
Learning Center, room 1180. Students use the same textbooks as students in the
classroom sections do but the learning is
self paced, meaning that students
move to the next chapter in the course when they have successfully completed
the previous chapter.
Do many students learn math this way?
Many students find this learning environment to be very flexible and supportive.
During each year, 59 sections of students have math class in the individualized
mode of instruction at the main campus. Many students take more than one class
because this method of learning is responsive to student needs. Also, if you
are in a traditional classroom math class and not doing well, it may be possible
to transfer into an individualized class.

How does the course work?
To learn the math, you will use:
- Your textbook
- Lessons and videos, which are available:
- on the Math and Science Lab computers
- for use on computers at home
- as video or audio tapes
- The Math/Science Center Testing Area
Taking Tests:
There is testing in the center for each chapter and students have an opportunity to learn what they don't know and study again and retest. You can receive help from your instructor in an individual session or from the tutors who work in the center. Each student receives a pacing schedule to help him/her finish in a comfortable but timely manner. You will use the testing area frequently to make sure you have mastered the content of each chapter before proceeding. Before you take each chapter test, your instructor will initial the permission slip for you and check the test number that you need.
If you learn the material quickly, you may take your final exam as soon as you pass all chapter tests. If you need additional time, you can finish the next semester. You may need to reregister depending on the progress made in the first semester. If you miss a class, you can make up the work with your instructor's permission any time that the center is open. It is possible to complete two courses in the same semester.
You must take your final exam on or before the date listed in the exam schedule posted for each class in the Math/Science Learning Center.
You must have a permission slip, sign the test log, and present your DCCC or state photo ID for the final exam.
