Apartment Living

Many apartments are located near Delaware County Community College. However, finding an apartment can often be difficult. The Office of International Student Services (Room 3555) can help by answering your questions and providing resources.

To make the process of searching for an apartment easier, the college has partnered with Places4students, an online apartment listing service, which provides a convenient housing resource for international students and all members of the college community.

Places4students is an easy-to-use website with local apartment listings. There is never a fee charged for use of the service. We expect the number and variety of apartment listings to increase over time as landlords and homeowners list their properties and students begin to use Places4students to secure housing.

APARTMENT RENTAL INFORMATION

Types of Apartments Listed
  • Studio or Efficiency – no separate bedroom. It is one large room with a kitchen area and a bathroom.
  • One Bedroom – one separate bedroom, living/dining area, bathroom, and kitchen.
  • Two Bedroom – two separate bedrooms, living/dining area, bathroom(s), and kitchen.
Information about Apartments in the United States
  • Most apartments are unfurnished. Furnished apartments may be priced higher.
  • All apartments should have a refrigerator and stove in the kitchen.
  • Monthly rental charges do not cover telephone charges.
  • Apartments vary as to what other utilities are included in the monthly rent.
  • Depending on the value of your personal items, you may want to buy insurance against fire and theft. Some apartments may require this insurance.
Information about Leasing an Apartment
  • Carefully consider the location of the building for issues of safety and ease of transportation. Unless you own a car, make sure the apartment is close to a bus route. (Routes 112 or 118 for Delaware County Community College, go to www.septa.org or search transit routes)
  • A lease or rental agreement will usually be required. Before signing a lease, please be sure to ask exactly what is included in the monthly rental charge. Find out if there are additional costs for electricity, hot water, heat, gas, air conditioning, and internet access. Review the amount of rent and length of lease before signing.
  • Many apartment leases require a Security Deposit equal to a month’s rent. This will be returned to you at the end of your leasing period if you have paid your rent in full and if there is no damage to the apartment.
  • Check on the condition of the apartment before moving in and request that the landlord or rental agent repair any existing damage or problems before your move-in date.
  • If you experience difficulty with a landowner or you have questions concerning a lease agreement visit the Office of International Student Services for assistance.

Additional Requirements
  • Update your address and telephone number with Delaware County Community College, Office of Student Records.
  • Update your address with the United States Postal Service.
  • Notify the management of your intent to vacate the apartment a minimum of two months prior to moving.

Host Family Program

Delaware County Community College international students may apply for Host Family Housing. The Housing Coordinator at the Office of International Student Services (Room 3555) can help students who wish to live with a host family.

Who is a Host Family?

A Host Family is a citizen of the United States who has agreed to house an international student. Host families provide an international student with his/her own bedroom and two meals per day (breakfast and dinner).

Delaware County Community College has many enthusiastic families involved in our Host Family Program. To become connected with DCCC's Host Family Program a Host must be located near public transportation and Delaware County Community College. The Host Family must demonstrate a genuine sensitivity to social differences and a strong desire to share American culture. Host Families must also complete a criminal background check conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police Department.

Why stay with a Host Family?

Host Families help international students acclimatize to the cultural, social, economic, political and academic challenges of study within the United States.

How long can I stay with a Host Family?

Once a student elects to live with a Host Family he/she is expected to remain with the Host for a minimum of one semester.

How much does it cost to live with a Host Family?

Students must submit a $600.00 housing deposit along with an Application for Host Family Housing in order to be placed in an American home. Students will be refunded the deposit upon vacating the Host Family's home provided he/she does not terminate the living arrangement prior to the completion of one semester or cause damage to the home.

The student is expected to pay the Host Family $600.00 per month. In return the student will be provided with his/her own bedroom and two meals per day.
