Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility

The workplace should be continually monitored by all employees, at all College sites, to ensure safe, efficient working environments to safeguard the welfare of employees. Since employees are usually more aware of unsafe conditions than anyone else, they are encouraged to make suggestions, recommendations, and criticisms of unsafe conditions to Physical Plant and their immediate supervisors so that they may be addressed and remedied.

Supervisors are responsible for the working conditions within their departments. Supervisors should remain alert at all times to dangerous and unsafe conditions, so that they may recommend corrective actions, assess new or changed situations for inherent accidents, and follow up on employee suggestions for corrective action so that unsafe conditions are not instituted or permitted to exist.

The College will not knowingly permit unsafe conditions to exist, nor will it permit employees to indulge in unsafe acts. The College believes that a meaningful program that includes participation can best ensure the safety of all employees and physical property by all.

The Environmental, Safety, and Health Committee, a subcommittee of the College Advisory System, meets once a month to review accident and injury reports, identify unsafe conditions and practices, and make recommendations. Injury reports are reviewed to identify contributing factors that can be reduced or eliminated, preventing future injuries. The committee is composed of representatives from the faculty, support staff and administration. All Campus sites are represented. General safety conditions, concerns and procedures are reviewed to enhance overall campus safety. Employees who are interested in being part of this committee can contact the College’s Safety and Security Leader.
