Pennsylvania law guarantees certain benefits to employees who are injured or become ill because of their jobs. Any job-related injury is covered, from minor injuries requiring only first aid to occupational illness or disease. When a College employee is injured or becomes ill because of their job, the most important task is to secure appropriate medical treatment. The injury or illness must be reported according to the following steps:
- The injured employee has the responsibility of reporting the work-related injury/illness immediately to the College nurse on duty and his/her supervisor. This should be done as soon as an injury occurs or within a 24-hour period. If the injured employee is unable to see the nurse, (i.e., works in the evening, etc.), the employee must contact the nurse, in-person or by phone (610-359-5140), as soon as possible. Every accident/illness, regardless of the severity, must be reported and documented.
- Once notified, the College nurse has the responsibility of completing a Work-Related Incident Report. It will then be faxed to the insurance carrier, Travelers, and to Human Resources. This should be done before the end of the workday on which the injury occurred or was reported. Human Resources will receive confirmation and a claim number for the accident/injury.
- Human Resources will send a copy of the report to the employee’s supervisor to sign and to the Security and Safety Department.
- n order to assure that medical treatment will be paid for by the insurance carrier, the injured employee must select from one of the designated health care providers listed on the “Posted Panel List.” These lists can be found in the nurses’ area, the bulletin board, by the security desk in Founders Hall, and off-campus sites. It is listed on the College’s Human Resources website. The injured employee must continue to treat with one of the providers listed, if necessary, for ninety (90) days from the date of first visit. The employee has the right to seek treatment or medical consultation from a non-designated provider during the ninety (90) day period, but such services shall be at the employee’s own expense during the applicable period of ninety (90) days.
- The College nurse will follow up with all employees who have been injured. In cases involving lost time, the insurance carrier will contact the employee.
