Philemona Williamson Exhibition
Opening Reception October 29, 3 PM – 7 PM
Artist on Campus 11 AM – 12 NOON

On view October 29 – November 25

The exhibition, a public art commission, makes its Philadelphia area debut at Delaware County Community College. It includes six triptychs for the Livonia Avenue aboveground subway station in Brooklyn, New York; commissioned through MTA Arts for Transit Permanent Art program. The College is showing the oil sketches that were made in preparation for the public art commission. Also exhibited will be large scale paintings that are on loan from the June Kelly Gallery in New York.

Williamson created tableaux of seasonal extremes – oversize sunflowers and butterflies and pumpkins and umbrellas that compete in scale with the human subjects. Williamson captures the whole gamut. Her mainly young protagonists are a mixture of races and ethnicities.

Of her work, Williamson states, ‘My paintings are of pre-adolescent girls and boys, children on the cusp of adulthood. The figures struggle to balance their innocence and awkwardness with their new found sexuality. The questions begin at this point…Who are these children? What are they doing and why?”

The Gallery opening, reception and discussion with Williamson is free and open to the public.
