Author James Bradley Visits DCCC October 20
As Part of Fall for a Book: Delaware County Reads Flags of Our Fathers
Delaware County Council, the Delaware County Library System, and the Delaware County Community College present "Fall for a Book: Delaware County Reads Flags of Our Fathers." Fall for a Book is Delaware County's first One Book, One County project.
This year's selection, Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley, tells the story of the six Marines photographed raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi at the battle of Iwo Jima, a scene that has become an enduring image of World War II. Author James Bradley, the son of one of the flag-raisers, also developed an abridged version of the book for young readers called Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima. In 2006, Clint Eastwood directed a film based on the book, as well as a film from the Japanese perspective called Letters from Iwo Jima.
Author James Bradley will visit the Community College, the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum, and the Aston Community Center and Public Library on Saturday, October 20.
Bradley will arrive at the College at 12:30 p.m. on October 20 to speak at 1 p.m., followed by a book-signing. Free tickets for this event can be picked up at the Campus Life Office beginning August 1. For ticket information, call 610-359-5341 or email camplife@dccc.edu.
As well as the author visits, there will be many local events in public libraries, such as book discussions, veterans speaking about their Iwo Jima experiences, and film screenings.
The Fall for a Book committee is also working with the Delaware County Department of Veterans Affairs, the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum, the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, and the Delaware County Literacy Council on events and materials.
