AHS 201 - Surgical Technology Practicum III

This course is a continuation of Surgical Technology Practicum II. Clinical assignment in the operating room of an affiliating agency. Selected learning experiences in general and specialty surgery are included. Focus is also directed toward anticipatory socialization and adaptation to aid role transformation from student to graduate. Students who select one of the multi-competency tracks will with the permission of the instructor, be provided with a clinical practicum to meet the selected competency. Optional placement in clinical agency of student's choice to be arranged through permission and consultation with program director.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Assemble the instruments and supplies necessary for surgery of the eye; plastic reconstructive surgery; pediatric surgery, burn surgery; trauma surgery; and transplant surgery.
  • Demonstrate the ability to function as a member of the surgical team during surgery of the eye; plastic reconstructive surgery; pediatric surgery, burn surgery; trauma surgery; and transplant surgery.
  • Become socialized to new facility environment to aid in role transformation from student to graduate.

Prerequisite: A “C” or better in Surgical Technology II (AHS 102) and Surgical Technology Practicum II (AHS 103).

Co-requisite: Surgical Technology III (AHS 200).

24 hours clinical laboratory each week 6 credits
