AHN 292 - Geriatrics and Mental Health Issues

This course examines the mental and behavioral changes that constitute normal aging along with the disorders that affect mental health in the elderly.  Diversity of personality characteristics among the elderly while recognizing neurological and behavioral disorders that primarily affect the elderly will be explored. Alzheimer's Disease and other organic brain diseases, psychological disorders and behaviors that affect socialization will be discussed. 

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand general concepts related to the field of geriatrics
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of different neurological, psychological, and behavioral disorders
  • Identify methods used to provide care and comfort for clients with neurological, psychological, and behavioral disorders

Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED and experience/education as a nurse aid.
