  3. Women who have already had one profession (e.g., nurse or teacher) and who now wish to consider a career change.

Who Will Provide This Service?

A DCCC Counselor with at least a Master's Degree in counseling or a related field will conduct these sessions. The counselor has also worked extensively with women and their issues.

What Will This Service Do For Me?

Career Directions for Women is a ten week workshop consisting of four major components. The first half of the workshop deals with self-assessment as it relates to career choice. During this time, participants will assess their skills, interests, values, motivators, personal traits, preferred work environments, and realities and commitments.

After this assessment, all group members will be given guidelines for pulling together a personal summary profile. Based on this profile, the leader and group members will list possible occupations for each participants to explore further. Each woman will also be given feedback related to her present situation.

The next step is usually Career Center research. All participants will be given a thorough tour of the Career and Counseling Center and its many resources.

The last part of the workshop involves putting together an action plan so that each woman can break down her career goal into manageable steps. During this part of the workshop, dealing with barriers to change will also be discussed.

The purpose of the workshop is twofold. It involves personal growth and support, as well as, actual planning for career change. To this end, the workshop follows an agenda and homework will be assigned. However, a critically important part of the sessions involves talking about feelings that are stimulated by thoughts of change.
