Is This Service For Me?
Career Adjustment Workshop is intended for men and women who are now working, but who are considering changing jobs or career fields. Individuals who have recently been laid off, or who are anticipating possible layoff, might consider this group. People who are planning early retirement, and/or a subsequent move to a new career field, could also benefit. Because the exercises used in this workshop rely on life and work experience, typical participants would be at least age 25 and above.
This group could also be helpful to people who are unhappy in their present positions, but who, for various reasons, hesitate to make a change. In these instances, self-assessment could be extremely helpful and may suggest job enrichment activities to improve the situation.
Who Will Provide This Service?
A DCCC counselor with at least a Master's Degree in counseling, or related field, will conduct these sessions. This counselor has worked extensively with career issues of adults, and is a Nationally Certified Counselor.
What Will This Service Do For Me?
Career Adjustment Workshop is a workshop which meets one evening per week for ten weeks. The initial part of the workshop deals with self-assessment as it relates to career choice. During this time, participants will assess their skills, interests, values, motivators, personal traits, preferred work environments, and realities and commitments.
The next step in the workshop is for each participant to get feedback regarding occupational options, and next steps as they relate to the individual's summary profile. Most participants will follow up this feedback by doing research in the Career and Counseling Center. (All participants will be given a thorough tour of the Career and Counseling Center.) In addition, many group members will also do information interviews with people employed in their fields of interest. One aspect covered during the career research phase will be how to investigate employment outlook in a variety of fields.
The final part of the workshop covers defining the next steps to reach one's career goals. Dealing with barriers and integrating job choices into one's total style will be discussed.
