Services, and Dr. Henrik Eger, Associate Professor of English and Communication, invite all faculty, administrators, staff, and students to attend and perhaps even participate in the fourth annual program of "Women’s Voices Around the World: Poetry in Many Different Languages to Celebrate International Women’s Day." March 8 is celebrated around the globe as a day of acknowledging the contributions of women of all cultures. The event will take place in the small auditorium on Thursday, March 8, from 11 a.m. to noon. This program is sponsored by the Black and Women’s History Month Committee and the Office of International Student Services.
Some of the international and American participants will briefly introduce a woman writer from their culture. Then an American student will read the translation of a poem by that author, followed by the person from abroad reading the text in the original language.
In the past, some honest and gripping poems from around the world were presented by students and faculty members; some of the students even wore their national costume. However, perhaps the most potent component to the event came when students shared often heart breaking stories, describing their experiences with the plight of girls and women in their cultures.
If you would like to participate in and/or send your students to a moving and thought provoking event that centers around our international students sharing aspects of their culture with the College community, please contact either Dr. Henrik Eger or Lydia Dell’Osa as soon as possible.
