Tell Me About the Externship Experience
The externship experience is held during the Spring, Summer I and Summer II semesters. The experience is six weeks in length and the student must complete 180 hours of clinical work within that period or approximately 30 per week. Six academic credits are awarded for successful completion of the externship. The clinical sites are selected and approved by the faculty, and the office staff serve as preceptors for students on a daily basis. A DCCC faculty member will visit once weekly during the experience and is always available by telephone for students who have questions or concerns. Students must have completed all course work required in the certificate program to participate in the externship.
Selected clinical externships will be provided in local medical offices and health care clinics under the supervision of the allied health faculty. These externships are work/learning experiences for which the student receives no monetary remuneration or other reimbursement.
Students will need to have on file in the Health Center of the College, the results of a complete physical examination including: laboratory tests, a complete blood count, serology and urinalysis. Additionally, students must have personal medical health insurance in effect for the duration of the externship, and be in compliance with the recommendations for the Hepatitis B vaccine. Students are required to purchase a white lab jacket or coat, a name tag and a DCCC insignia patch to be place on the left upper sleeve. White sturdy shoes and a watch with a sweep second hand are required. It is recommended that you purchase a personal stethoscope.
