2009 - 2010 NURSING EDUCATION GRANT PROGRAM
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT AGREEMENT AND CONSENT
2009 - 2010 DR. EDNA B. MCKENZIE SCHOLARSHIP FOR DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP
I am delighted to inform you that Delaware County Community College’s Nursing Program applied for and received a grant for $122,465 from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation Fund (PHEFF) Nursing Education Grant Program to support recruitment and retention of our nursing students. In addition, we have also received funding from the Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students totaling $8,547. This year, students who are interested in applying for support from these grants will need to meet the following criteria and submit an application that will be reviewed by a designated Grants committee. All applications will be evaluated and ranked by a review committee using a point scale based on the criteria. Recipients will also need to complete a statement (Exhibit 1) at the end of the semester describing how the scholarship helped you to achieve your career and academic goals for the year. Submission of an application does not guarantee an award.
To apply for this funding the following criteria are required:
- Must have a completed FAFSA.
- Show demonstrated need, based on family income (FAFSA).
- Currently registered nursing major taking nursing courses during the fall of 2009.
- Have a GPA of 2.5 or greater.
The following criteria will be considered in the awarding of the grant process:
1.) A written statement with your application indicating how you think the scholarship will help you to meet your academic goals of becoming a nurse. Include in this application statement:
- The level of education of your parents, i.e., if you are a first-generation college student.
- Identify and describe your responsibilities while attending school, i.e., employment, single parent, raising children, etc.
- Identify and describe any obstacles that you have overcome either economically or educationally to attend school.
- Self identify as an under-represented individual in the profession of nursing, i.e., male, or ethnic minority.
2.) Sign the Recipient Agreement for the funding.
3.) Submit the application and your written statement with the signed Recipient Agreement to the Nursing Department Office (Room 3195) by the deadline of 4:00 PM, Friday, September 11, 2009. The deadline is firm and no exceptions for late applications will be made.
Please Note: If you have not demonstrated a strong financial need but are in a population that is under-represented in nursing, you may still be eligible to receive funding. Examples of these populations might include, but are not limited to: individuals with a foreign language fluency, students who have demonstrated experience working with special populations and would be willing to continue working in that environment as a nurse, individuals who are themselves members of special populations (educationally disadvantaged, limited English proficient, nontraditional, disabled, single parents, older returning adults, second career), or LPNs who are interested in additional education to become RNs. Be aware that all scholarships will be awarded on a per semester basis. Renewal for the second semester will be contingent on successfully completing the first semester of academic year 2009/2010.
The committee reviewing the completed applications will inform applicants within 30 days of the deadline if they have been selected for a scholarship and the amount that will be applied to your tuition. Based on academic performance and funding availability, the scholarship will be renewed for the Spring 2010 semester.
