Ways to Support the College
You may restrict your gift to the Annual Fund to support for scholarships, programs, faculty development or capital projects. Unrestricted gifts are also welcome and greatly valued because they allow the College to respond to unexpected challenges and emerging opportunities.
The 2012-13 annual fund campaign focuses on the renovations and upgrading of the Auditorium and Library, which will be transformed into a Learning Commons. Built in the early 1970s, the original buildings reflect a bygone era of technology, design and decor. The College’s investments in capital improvements, expansion and renovations are being made to reflect technological and pedagogical advances in education.
A fundraising campaign to assist in the renovations of these prominent facilities has been underway, and all constituents of the College are being asked to help. A brochure describes the two projects.
A grand opening event on Dec. 2, 2012, unveiled the newly renovated Auditorium to the public. The sell-out event featured David Kim (violin), Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, with Jeffery DeVault (piano), and was open to the public. It was an impressive beginning to a new era of arts programming that is expected to attract repeat visitors to the College’s stunning new venue for the performing arts.
The new Auditorium features an enlarged stage, theater style lighting, a surround sound system and an upgraded audio visual system that allows for transmission to multiple campuses. Among the new furnishings are upholstered seats, hand rails and lighting along the aisles and ramps for wheelchair
The Learning Commons will transform the Library intoa 21st century learning environment from which all students will benefit. A goal in creating this new model of learning is to better serve a diverse student population by accommodating a variety of learning styles. The latest technologies will be used to
engage students with subject matter as well as with their peers, faculty and tutors.
A special brochure on the “Save a Seat for Me” initiative explains the giving options for the Learning Commons or Auditorium.
In 2010, Delaware County Community College was fortunate to receive a $75,000 Dreamkeepers grant. Dreamkeepers was created by Scholarship America™ to assist community college students who might otherwise be forced to drop out of school when facing a financial crisis. Unforeseen financial emergencies are reported as one of the top reasons community college students drop out.
During 2011 and 2012, the College was able to assist 45 students with essential needs such as transportation, child care, utility bills, car repairs, even food. Out of the 45 students who received assistance, only four withdrew from the College. Our success rate reinforces Dreamkeepers' claim that emergency financial assistance helps to retain students as they pursue their academic careers.
For the past two years, the annual fund focused on raising matching funds for the Dreamkeepers program, a requirement of the grant. We succeeded in raising the matching funds and in 2012 earned a bonus grant for exceeding our goal. The fund continues to serve all students who meet the guidelines.
Scholarships are critical for College students who cannot afford the full cost of their education. Thanks to the support of our many constituents, the College’s Educational Foundation awards more than $200,000 in scholarship support each year. The Foundation’s Scholarship and Awards brochure lists 120 programs of support that recognize students, faculty and staff for their accomplishments in the classroom and throughout the College community.
Donors wishing to establish a scholarship may award an annual scholarship or create an endowed scholarship in perpetuity.
Annual scholarships may be established in any amount and will be presented in the full amount to the students who meet the guidelines established by the donor.
Endowed scholarships provide a permanent source of scholarship aid. They are established with a gift of $10,000 or more, which is placed in the Foundation’s investment portfolio. A portion of the interest generated from the endowed scholarship fund is awarded annually to the students who meet the guidelines established by the donor.
Annual and endowed scholarships may be named for the donor, a loved one, a corporation, foundation or organization. To learn more about establishing and naming a scholarship at the College, please contact the Executive Director of the Delaware County Community College Educational Foundation at 610-359-5131.
