Office of the Provost
Welcome!
On behalf of all faculty, staff, administration and students, I am pleased to welcome you to Delaware County Community College. This institution is competency- and outcomes-based and prides itself on excellence in teaching.
The Office of the Provost is responsible for the academic and student life of the college, focusing on students, faculty, curricula, and learning support and delivery systems. There are five academic divisions at the College: Allied Health, Emergency Service and Nursing; Business and Computer Information Sciences; Communications, Arts and Humanities; Mathematics, Science and Engineering; Public Services and Social Sciences; and, Technical Education and the Municipal Police Academy. Our Community and Corporate Education Division is responsible for an extensive array of non-credit and off-campus programs. Support systems include Career and Counseling, the Library , Learning Resource Centers , Special Needs and Student Activities, to name a few.
Delaware County Community College is a busy and active place for learning. This fall the College will once again be bustling with activity. We will begin our new Academy for College Excellence program, which is an integrated, full time, first semester program aimed at increasing student success and retention. Our faculty will also be expanding the Achieving the Dream initiatives of supplemental instruction, conferencing with students, and the Early Alert program. Student success is a College priority, and all of us must involve ourselves in the conversation and programs revolving around improving student retention and educational goal achievement.
Our faculty and staff are involved in continuous evaluation of our programs. Assessment and data-driven decision making are the driving forces in higher education, and the College has embraced this philosophy as part of our long term strategic planning. Whether it is course assessment, program review, or collectively answering the questions of “what the associate degree” qualifies and enables a graduate to do, each of us will be asked to respond in a meaningful way to the questions of why and how.
Personal professional development exists at the College in several ways. For faculty, both Temple University and Widener University will be offering graduate coursework on campus this academic year. Temple’s program is geared more towards instruction, while Widener’s is aimed at leadership in higher education. A Leadership Academy is also available to all employees. This non-credit program meets two times a month and is open to all employees. Its purpose is to provide a general overview of leadership within the community college system and give the participants an understanding of the various working parts of the higher educational organization. Our Center for Excellence is a faculty-led center for ongoing professional development, which sponsors the Faculty Institutes held in the summer.
Professional and personal development is also ongoing for our students. The Office of Student Services offers workshops in leadership throughout the year. Opportunities exist to join and lead the numerous clubs on campus. The Diversity Committee works to ensure a selection of speakers and programs occurs each month. All are welcome to attend.
The goal of the Office of the Provost is to ensure that your experiences at the College are positive and productive. I hope that I will have the opportunity to meet you on one of our five locations in Delaware and Chester Counties.
